The successful design of theatres of any size involves several aspects of acoustic expertise, including mechanical noise control, interior acoustics and geometry and the design and specification of AV equipment.
The mechanical noise or NC level control is achieved through examining the air-handling equipment specifications in order to correctly design silencing devices and through duct path modeling on computer to reduce turbulence induced noise in the system. The recommended NC level for theatres is NC 20 to 25. This level of background noise is low enough to allow the full dynamic range of the sound track to be appreciated without distraction. A low NC level also maximizes speech intelligibility, which is critical in large theatres. I
The acoustics is dependant on several factors. One is optimum room geometry which is determined through three dimensional computer modeling. The room geometry controls sound reflections, promotes favorable early reflections and determines the placement of sound absorbing material to absorb long delayed reflections which might be perceived as echo. The modeling process also allows us to evaluate the position of balconies or other projections into the space which may cause acoustic 'shadowing' and make some seating areas less enjoyable than others. The general level of reverberance is calculated through the modeling to produce an RT60 in the recommended range for the volume of the theatre, but the model informs the choice of position of the material for maximum benefit.
Predictions can be made from the computer model of the degree of speech intelligibility at each seating position and coverage maps of the sound reinforcement system along with time arrival data from sound reflections give a reliable picture of the functionality of the room.
Cinema acoustics and theatre acoustics are key factors in creating memorable entertainment experiences. Acoustics By Design provides acoustical design consultation to commercial cinemas and theatres to help ensure captivating performing arts events, movies, and multi-media presentations from the cinema screen and theatre stage.
GOLDEN HARVEST TEAM consults with cinema, theatre, and performing arts architects, facilities managers, and technical directors to ensure the optimal cinema and theatre acoustics. To assist acoustically shape cinemas and theatres in the design phase, we employ sophisticated acoustical modeling software to predict and analyze reverberation, reflection, vibration, and other cinema acoustics and theatre acoustical concerns. For cinemas and theatres already built, we use state-of-the-art acoustics measurement technology and predictive modeling to evaluate potential solutions to acoustical problems.
Isolating the cinema and theatre from unwanted, disruptive noise is just as vital. Experts are typically engaged to also prevent noise and vibration from adjacent spaces, mechanical systems, and the exterior environment from adversely affecting cinema acoustics and theatre acoustics.
We offer services to performing arts centers, community theatres, commercial movie theatres, IMAX® theatres, recital halls, amphitheatres, cinema complexes, and other performance and entertainment venues.
