For acoustics and audio/visual design we are often approached to design suites of rooms dedicated to A/V production or entire facilities dedicated to broadcast or production.
The challenges of design in this area are in providing high levels of sound isolation, exacting control of reverberance, control of frequency response in rooms and facilitating the flow of activities by functional facility planning. By combining interior architectural and acoustical design expertise we create state of the art listening and production environments.
Production rooms are designed to the appropriate standard for sound reproduction. Control rooms are designed to promote favorable reflection patterns and maximize audio imaging. Video production rooms are designed for audio and video functionality.
HVAC noise is carefully controlled in production rooms, usually restricting NC levels to 20 or below. Sound isolation between studios and controls rooms is also critical in facility design and we achieve STC levels in the high 60's or better carefully isolating all flanking paths for vibration.
Of course, every facility doesn't require extreme levels of isolation. Small production facilities or project studios can function well when built with standard materials and techniques if careful attention is paid to the design. We use three dimensional computer modeling for all audio projects with ray tracing, RT60 and frequency response predicted prior to construction. We have a data-base of thousands of materials for reverberation control and some proprietary designs for sound shaping modules which we have tested at NRC. Using this database we can produce simulations accurate to a tenth of a second in RT. Wall designs for sound isolation are also all tested assemblies, using standard construction methods and materials, which simplifies the construction and process and controls costs.
